The Three Amigos
In The Three Amigos, a charcoal drawing suffused with warmth and understated joy, Troy Hul Arnold brings together three of his central muses—himself, his sister Patrice, and their mother Catherine London. The trio faces the viewer directly, each adorned with soft, inviting smiles that exude familiarity and ease. Their expressions offer more than a simple portrait; they extend a cultural gesture—a welcome into the familial and emotional space they occupy.
The work draws on the Trinidadian concept of “liming,” a term used to describe the art of hanging out, of being together without urgency or agenda. In this piece, Arnold translates that spirit into visual form, using the intimacy of charcoal to emphasize the closeness of the moment and the unspoken bond between generations.
By composing the figures as equal participants in this shared gaze, Arnold creates not just a portrait of kinship, but an open invitation—welcoming the viewer to pause, be present, and partake in the quiet power of togetherness.
