Untitled (Tablescape)
In this ballpoint ink drawing, Troy Hul Arnold turns an ordinary kitchen countertop into a quiet stage of memory and presence. Rendered in his signature observational style, this untitled tablescape captures a fleeting moment—objects left mid-action, traces of domestic ritual suspended in time.
Here, the kitchen is not simply a functional space, but a site of communion, creativity, and layered histories. Each item—perhaps a bowl, a knife, a piece of fruit—becomes a symbolic stand-in for the gestures and conversations that unfold during meal preparation. The objects seem to hum in relation to one another, inviting the viewer to reconstruct what might have just occurred, or what is still in progress.
Executed entirely in ballpoint ink, the drawing carries a diaristic quality, intimate and immediate. Arnold’s use of this humble medium reinforces the honesty of the subject: the everyday made sacred through attention. In this still moment, we are reminded that memory lives in objects, and stories often reside in the smallest details.
